Moves are the foundation of self-driving money in Piere. A Move tells Piere when to transfer money, how much to transfer, and between which accounts. This guide walks you through the full setup flow—from choosing a trigger to activating your Move—and explains why certain default values appear automatically.
What Is a Move? #
A Move is an automated or manual money transfer rule you create inside Piere. Moves work alongside your MyPlan framework and allow you to automate your savings, budgeting, and cash-flow management effortlessly.
Each Move includes:
- A trigger (when the Move should run)
- An amount (how much Piere should move)
- A source & destination account
- Optional safety rules
- Automation settings (AutoMove)
Choosing Your Move Trigger #
At the top of the Create Plan screen, you’ll choose between:
- Event (SUPPORTED)
- Once (not yet supported)
- Scheduled (not yet supported)
Only Event-based Moves are currently available. Here’s what each option means:
Event-Based Moves (SUPPORTED) #
Event Moves run in response to real activity in your accounts, such as:
“Every pay day” #
This Move runs automatically when Piere detects your paycheck deposit.
Default amount logic:
- Piere automatically pre-fills 20% of your most recent paycheck, as long as that paycheck was over $500.
This helps users automate an ideal savings rate without needing to calculate anything.
“When a balance is less than an amount” #
Use this when you want to refill a low-balance account.
Default threshold logic:
- Piere defaults the threshold to 2 months of your average expenses.
This aligns with widely recommended financial-cushion practices.
“When a balance is more than an amount” #
Use this when you want to automatically sweep extra cash.
Default threshold logic:
- Again, Piere defaults to 2 months of expenses, letting you automatically move excess cash into savings.
“Move the difference / Move the extra money” #
For balance-based triggers, Piere gives you clear explanations:
- “the difference” = how much is needed to fill the target threshold
- “the extra money” = the surplus above the threshold
This ensures you always understand whether the Move is topping up or sweeping excess.
Once (NOT YET SUPPORTED) #
Once is intended for a single scheduled Move.
You’ll eventually be able to:
- Pick a date
- Enter an amount
- Run the Move only one time
Until this is released, this option stays disabled.
Scheduled (NOT YET SUPPORTED) #
Scheduled Moves will allow:
- Daily transfers
- Weekly transfers
- Monthly transfers
- Custom recurring intervals
This is not yet available but is part of the upcoming roadmap.
Selecting the Amount #
Based on your Event trigger, Piere automatically proposes a smart amount:
✔ For pay day: 20% of your last paycheck #
- Only applied if the paycheck was >$500
- Helps automate consistent savings rates aligned with your income
- The amount is editable at any time
✔ For balance events: Two months of expenses #
Piere calculates:
- Your average monthly spending
- Multiplies it by 2
- Uses that as the suggested threshold
You can adjust the value if you prefer a different buffer.
Choosing Accounts #
Every Move requires two accounts:
- Source account (“from”) — where the money will be pulled from
- Destination account (“to”) — where the money will be deposited
Piere automatically selects smart defaults based on the Move template you choose. These defaults are fully editable and exist to help you create Moves quickly and confidently.
Piere displays for each account:
- Account name
- Current balance
- The institution icon (Chase, Fidelity, etc.)
- A dropdown allowing you to switch accounts at any time
Below is how Piere chooses the default accounts for each template.
Payday Template #
From Account — Default #
➡ Your paycheck inflow account
This is the checking account where your most recent paycheck over $500 was deposited.
To Account — Default #
➡ Your savings account with the highest balance
This helps direct your savings to the place where you already keep the most money, usually your primary savings location.
Both selections can be edited.
Cover My Expenses Template #
From Account — Default #
➡ Your savings account with the highest balance
This assumes that transfers used to “cover expenses” should come from your most funded savings bucket.
To Account — Default #
➡ Your checking account with the most money spent
This is typically the checking account used for bills or everyday spending.
Both selections can be edited.
Save the Extra Money Template #
From Account — Default #
➡ Your checking account that received your most recent paycheck
This is the likely home of your extra disposable income.
To Account — Default #
➡ Your savings account with the highest balance
This ensures your surplus cash flows into your main savings destination.
Both selections can be edited.
AutoMove (Optional Automation) #
AutoMove lets Piere run your Moves automatically without requiring manual approval.
How AutoMove works #
When enabled:
- Piere transfers money exactly as specified
- All transfers follow your Move Safely settings
- You receive notifications before every Move
- You can pause or skip any upcoming transfer
Important: AutoMove requires verified account ownership #
Because AutoMove uses ACH transfers via our licensed financial partner, you must complete identity verification before enabling it.
If AutoMove is off, the Move still exists but requires manual initiation each time.
Move Safely Controls #
These settings let you customize when not to move money.
Safety features include: #
- Minimum balance after move
Piere will not run your Move if the source account would drop below this number. - Notifications
You’ll receive:- A notification X days/hours/minutes before the Move
- A reminder 15 minutes before the Move
Default values #
- Notify me: 1 day (editable)
- Minimum balance: $500 (editable)
Move Safely can be set globally or overridden per Move.
Naming Your Move #
You will be prompted to name your Move. Examples:
- “Payday Savings Boost”
- “Extra Cash to High-Yield Savings”
- “Refill My Bills Account”
Reviewing Your Summary #
Before activating your Move, Piere provides a detailed summary written in clear English:
- What will be moved
- When it will happen
- From which account
- To which account
- What safety rules apply
- How you will be notified
This ensures complete transparency.
Activating Your Move #
Finally, tap Save & Activate.
Depending on whether AutoMove is enabled:
If AutoMove is ON #
Your transfers will run automatically according to the trigger.
If AutoMove is OFF #
Your Move is created, but you will need to manually initiate each transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions #
Why are the default values automatically filled in? #
Piere uses your spending and income data to recommend healthy, practical defaults:
| Event Type | Default Formula | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Payday Move | 20% of paycheck >$500 | Aligns with typical savings-rate goals |
| Balance threshold (low) | 2 months of expenses | Supports emergency-fund best practices |
| Balance threshold (high) | 2 months of expenses | Ensures excess cash is automatically used efficiently |
You can customize all defaults.
Why don’t One-Time and Scheduled Moves work yet? #
They appear in the UI because they are part of the Move system but will be released in a future update.
What financial partner processes my transfers? #
Transfers are handled through Dwolla, a licensed ACH provider using encrypted, federally compliant systems. All transfers require verified ownership.
Why do my Move dates shift if I didn’t run the Move today? #
If a Move was supposed to run today but you did not complete approval (or AutoMove was off), Piere automatically updates the Move date to the next day.
This prevents Moves from “getting stuck in the past.”
