Rollover budgeting is available on Piere Plus+ and Piere Platinum.
What is rollover budgeting? #
Rollover budgeting carries last month’s result into this month’s budget, per category. If you underspend a category, the leftover can increase that category’s budget next month; if you overspend, the overage can reduce it. It’s the right tool for categories that naturally fluctuate month to month.
Setting your rollover rules #
From the Budget tab, tap the (…) menu in the top right and choose Rollover budget. The Rollover Rules tab lists every budgeted category — income included — with three choices in plain language. Tap one per category:
- Fresh start — every month starts clean at its budgeted amount. Nothing carries over.
- Carry forward — unspent money adds to next month’s budget. If Groceries is budgeted $400 and you spend $340, next month it starts at $460 instead of $400. On income categories, a shortfall carries into next month’s expected income instead.
- True balance — both directions: leftovers add to next month, overspending subtracts from it. Your budget always reflects where you truly stand.
A few things to know on this page:
- Your choices save automatically as you tap them.
- The All categories row at the top applies one choice to everything at once (with an undo if you change your mind).
- The floating (?) button opens an explainer with a worked example using your own numbers.
- If a category shows a custom tag, it has a legacy rollover rule from an older version of Piere — picking any of the three choices replaces it.
The “Include surplus in budget” toggle #
Also on the Rollover budget page, this toggle controls whether rolled-over amounts are added to the budget numbers you see each month. When it’s on, a $60 leftover shows up as +$60 on that category’s budget next month. When it’s off, your rollover rules still track leftovers and overspending, but the budget numbers you see don’t change.
What happens each month #
Rollover happens automatically when a new month begins, following the rules you’ve set. The rules stay in place month after month until you change them — and changes you make today only affect future months, never past ones.
To see what actually rolled over, open the History tab on the Rollover budget page — it lists each month’s rollover activity for this budget.
Adjusting a rollover amount #
After a rollover has happened, you can fine-tune it per category. From the Budget tab, tap the category to open its details page. Between the budgeted amount and the transaction list you’ll see a rollover pill showing the total rolled-over amount — positive if you had money left, negative if you overspent, accumulated across months. Tap the pill to enter a new rollover amount; the change applies to this month’s total immediately. The details page also shows your recent rollover history month by month.
If a category has no rollover rule yet, the pill says so — tapping it takes you to the Rollover Rules page to set one.
